This part of Montreal is known as the West Island has a lot of different communities. Many who've never been aware of it frequently confuse it with an island that is west-facing. It is often cited as being the place of birth for Amanda Brugel but while that is true, her stay there was short. Brugel was raised in Courtice close to Oshawa Ontario. When she was a child, she wanted to be professional performer, however an unexpected expansion of her body made it impossible. In an article from The Toronto Star she admitted In heels, I'm 6'1 inch. Once I surpassed all my male partners then I stopped. Many ex-dancers switch to acting. In the case of Brugel it was the guidance by her drama instructor in high school who pushed her in the direction she needed. The teacher who suggested she take on a part in the annual school production. She was chosen to play the main part for Anne of Green Gables after she tried out. Following her award of the Fine Arts Talent Scholarship, she attended York University and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 2000. Since then, Brugel has been in over 60 productions both big and small. One of the most memorable was when she landed the role of Rita in The Handmaid's Tale. Brugel is the only Canadian actor on the show in the season 1 and was only seen at times.
